Biography
Harry Belafonte was born in New York City in 1927 to parents who were immigrants from Jamaica. He grew up in Harlem and was exposed to jazz, music, and theatre at a young age.
His first taste of fame came when he dropped out of college to join the Navy. There, he organized a group of sailors to form a singing group that toured the Pacific performing for troops.
After his time in the Navy, he began his musical career as a singer. He became very famous for singing folk music and songs about civil rights and social justice. He was one of the first black singers who became well-known across all races.
He retired from music in the early 2000s, but came back in 2010 for a performance at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony. He has been performing ever since, with his latest concert being in 2018.
